Ice Cleats Save The Day

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back: The Advantages of Ice Cleats

If you are an avid ice fisher like me then you will know how different conditions can be on a frozen lake from time to time. Often the ice will be covered in packed down snow, but other times it will be wind swept shear ice. Conditions can change rapidly out on the hard water and you always want to be prepared for what ever nature has in store. Ice cleats will improve your comfort, safety and enjoyment of the sport.

On shear ice it can feel like you are taking one step forward and two steps back if you are just wearing boots. Ice Cleats can make all the difference especially when you have toboggans full of gear. You can cut down your travel time by at least half by having them.

The type of Ice cleats I like to use are made to just stretch over the tread of your boots. They consist of a rubber frame, and have metal studs or grips. They can be purchased for less than $10.00 at many outdoors, fishing, or department stores, or can be bought online. You can also find ice cleats, and overshoes priced as much as $100.00 or more. For me the cheap ones work great and for just a small investment I have a much more enjoyable trip with far less effort spent lugging a sled or walking to find the productive areas of a lake.
