Planning is underway for the 2012 Ice Fishing Derby here in Elliot Lake! We hope to have as great a turnout as last year, and have some great improvements in the derby.

Feb 2, 2012 on Horne Lake in Elliot Lake. Come on out and register for your change at THOUSANDS in cash and prizes!

Friday Feb 24th at 6pm will be a pre-registration event hosted at the Elliot Lake Masonic Hall on Spruce avenue directly across from the Arena. You can register at this event as well as enjoy a cash bar and snacks! Bring your friends for a fun evening.

Planning is underway for the 2012 Ice Fishing Derby here in Elliot Lake! We hope to have as great a turnout as last year, and have some great improvements in the derby. For example, our bbq shack will be located in the centre of the derby area for easy access to everyone. Also, due to popular demand and constructive feedback from past entrants, we will be spending the same amount of money on less prizes. We are doing this for 2 reasons:

1. The prize presentation took far too long and people lost interest
2. All prizes will be worth much more and will be of greater value. No one will go home with a $20 prize!

First prize will still be half of the registration money (last year was $23k!). We are working on a brand new Polaris machine for 2nd prize and also a great 3rd prize. Stay tuned!

We’re super excited about this coming year and its improvements, and we will keep you posted as to when tickets are on sale. We hope to have them on sale well before Christmas since they will make a great gift!

Thanks to everyone for their continued support, and this year will be bigger and better than ever!

Contact the Welcome Centre here in Elliot Lake at 1-800-661-6192 for more information or to order by credit card. Tickets will also be available in person at the Elliot Lake Trading post, but will be cash sales only.

Mayors across Ontario will take part in an imaginative, media grabbing ice fishing contest. One town will win an Argo, especially equipped for rescue work with a value of over $23,000.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 15, 2011 -
The MAYORS ICE FISHING CHALLENGE is designed to partner with:
Towns seeking to stand out as winter fishing destinations and be showcased as such.
Tourism organizations looking for fresh ideas to capture media attention.
Supporters that value an ambitious advertising campaign including TV, radio and print that will be national and multilingual.
Towns that will venture to make gains in popularity with visitors and residents and possibly be taking home the versatile and irreplaceable Argo for their town’s rescue crews.
At over $23,000 the grand prize Argo is worth much more than the typical cost of being a part of this unique event.

The participating towns will be first competing against other towns that are located within the same Ontario Regional Tourism Organization. The winning team within each RTO continues on to challenge the winning team from each of the other RTOs. These 13 teams will compete for a final day of ice fishing on a following date. For 2012 the final will be on Lake Simcoe. The winning team of the 2012 Mayors Ice Fishing Challenge will receive the Argo on behalf of their fire department. For one very lucky town, this is another occasion to invite the public and news media groups to the presentation.

CPR Fishing Events© is enthusiastically offering the Mayors Ice Fishing Challenge to every town in Ontario.

Ice fishing is part of the $2.3 billion generated annually by sport fishing in the province, and it can be a growing contributor to tourism. Building awareness of ice fishing and its place in tourism is a leading objective for CPR Fishing Events©.

The Challenge dates coincide with Ontario’s Family Ice Fishing Weekend. From February 18-20, 2012, Canadian residents can fish license-free in Ontario. (Normal fishing regulations still apply.) The requirements for ice fishing are extremely simple, suitable for anyone of just about any ability.
Spectators become Participants.
Towns across Ontario have capitalized on this special weekend to create ice-fishing festivals and derbies that draw hundreds, in some cases thousands of people.

The nature of ice fishing makes it easy for people to get out and be involved. Any media group covering the event is going to find it accessible and with a pace that gives time for interviews and background reporting. Being up close with the Mayor and firefighter teams is not going to be a problem.

Even small scale municipal ice fishing events have been able to draw out on-location news coverage, both by newspapers and regional television with suitable advance promotion.

Promotional Features
CPR Fishing Events© will be creating interest in the Challenge with a media campaign of print, television and internet exposure. We will magnify the total effect by generating additional coverage through our network of connections in sport fishing and tourism that use these same means of distributing information and entertainment.

Promotional content is being created by CPR Fishing Events© to ensure coverage by a variety of means:
- Broadcast television, radio and newspaper advertising (multilingual and national)
- Point of interest cards, brochures, posters and more for visitor information centers and town offices.
- Media Kits to assist partners in getting the message out through their own resources.
- Website, Message Boards, Social networking, ie. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube
- News releases, Podcasts

Each town’s unique identity will be showcased prominently in the above advertising materials, to catch the public’s eye as an ice-fishing and tourism destination.

Additionally on the days of the event:
Sponsor/Partner logos on banners at the launch and at the fishing spot.
Argo support vehicles will display logos as well.
Random giveaways and draws for prizes with sponsor branding, to hold the crowd
Media coverage with VIP treatment for reporters, camera crews, etc. (parking, access to special guests and sponsors, on-ice transportation, media kits)

Partners in Tourism are encouraged to respond to this opportunity.

Sponsor inquiries are invited. This event will have broad public appeal.

More detail on event organization, advertising objectives and budgeting are available and ready to present.

Ling, or fresh water cod are probably one of the most prolific species that one can plan to target in the cold, deep northern lakes of Ontario. These fish are primarily a nocturnal feeder. They live deep, very deep, and at night they slither their way up from these depths seeking forage in shallower areas. They will continue to feed right through the night, providing tons of action for you and your fishing buddies for many hours.

Aside from their enormous populations in most northern lakes is the fact that these are one of the tastiest fish species available to be angled through the ice in northern Ontario. Once you’ve tasted some fresh battered and fried ling, you’ll quickly realize why they’ve come to be called “poor mans lobster”.

Watch the video below for some great tips from Tim Smyth of Mad Fisher Media on how to target this easy to catch fish while ice fishing.

Ontarios deep, cold northern lakes are home to some of our most sought after quarry when Ice Fishing. For most people, thinking of these lakes brings images of giant lake trout, and hordes of whitefish. There are other species that are just as plentiful, actually more plentiful than these other well known fish species.

The burbot, ling, or fresh water cod, is one of these species. In northern Ontario, this species is extremely abundant, yet highly under utilized. This is surprising because the fish is one of the tastiest fresh water fish species available to anglers during the hard water season. Also referred to as “Poor Mans Lobster”, there are a variety of ways that this tasty fish can be prepared.

Watch the video below to learn a little more about this species.

Many folks who fish with live or dead bait will from time to time use minnows as their offering to fish. With that usually comes an excess of minnows at the end of the day. Why waste this perfectly fine bait when you can save them for future use.

The main trick here is to salt any leftover minnows that you have from your fishing trips. Simply storing them in a bag with some salt, in the freezer is an excellent way to keep a good supply of salted minnows that can be used to chum the area that you are ice fishing.

Watch the video below where Tim Smyth of Mad Fisher Media explains the benefits of saving unused minnows, salting them, and using them for the purpose of chumming when ice fishing.
